SOFTBALL PLACES FOUR ON 2008 CAPITAL ONE ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMS

Three seniors and one sophomore represent the Mavs on SLC All-Academic Teams

FRISCO, Texas - Three seniors on UT Arlington's softball team end their collegiate playing careers with one last honor, as pitcher Laura Jones, outfielder Katie Jones and shortstop Amanda Swofford earned Capital One Academic All-Southland Conference Softball Honors, league offices announced Wednesday.

In addition to the three seniors the Mavs also placed sophomore pitcher Cara Hulme on the Academic All-SLC First Team.

Laura Jones joins Hulme on the first team, is the 2008 B.G. Wilson Student-Athlete of the Year and finished the season with a team-leading 1.81 ERA while earning her degree in Architecture and maintaining a 3.70 GPA. Hulme currently has a 3.62 GPA in Kinesiology and helped lead the Mavs to a second-place finish in the SLC with six shutouts in conference games and a 1.29 ERA.

Representing UTA on the second-team, Katie Jones hit .345 on the season with six homeruns and 21 RBIs while graduatuing with a 3.09 GPA in Criminal Justice, while Swofford finished with a 3.34 GPA in Interdisciplinary Studies and led the team with 12 homeruns and 28 RBI.

Northwestern State's Cari Bruno was named the Student-Athlete of the Year and was one of three Lady Demons on the two teams. In 2008, Bruno led the Demons with a .302 batting average and earned All-SLC third-team honors.

In all, 10 SLC schools placed at least one student-athlete on the 2008 All-Academic squad. Texas State placed five players on the squad. Northwestern State had three, while Southeastern Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin and McNeese State each had two. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Nicholls State, Sam Houston State and Central Arkansas each had one member on the team.
